The road to EV-01

Thursday 16th of August 2018

That was the day I paid Audi € 2.000 to become a pre-booker of the upcoming all-electric Audi e-tron.
Fast forward to early January 2019. All (Belgian) pre-bookers received a message from Audi letting them know they have exactly 2 weeks time to configure their e-tron, starting on Monday the 14th of January 2019.

Tuesday 15th of January 2019

I paid my dealership “Audi Jennes” at Boortmeerbeek a visit and made the very first configuration of my e-tron. And although I was already certain I would buy the car there were still some concerns regarding colors and options. So I decided to not pull the trigger immediately and visited the Brussels Autoshow first.

Monday 21st of January 2019

I placed my order for a Typhoon Grey Audi e-tron advanced 55 quattro. I was told the first cars would be delivered in March but those were all stock cars, the personal configurations would be delivered 1-2 months later. My delivery date was set for the 13th of May.
A big thank you to my salesperson Matthijs De Maeyer who not only did an excellent job on helping me configure the car but also for going the extra mile!

Friday 3rd of May 2019

My car arrived at the dealer, 10 days sooner than expected! So I headed out to them to find the car sitting on a large parking lot, still covered in white wrapping. But even in that state, she looked good! I specced her with 21″ multi-spoke rims for summer and 20″ dynamic rims for winter.

My first mod was installed: black Audi logos. Just a small detail but a great one, especially on a car with the shadow look package!

Friday 10th of May 2019

There she was, standing in the delivery room, together with 4 other (non-electric) Audis. And because there were 4 other cars awaiting their new owners, space was a bit cramped so unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take decent pictures at that time. But to be honest, I really couldn’t care less, after all it was e-tron D-Day! The delivery itself took around 2hrs, thanks to Guido for explaining everything to me in detail!

As you can see on the pictures the 21″ multi-spoke rims were changed with 22″ GMP Gunner rims in Matt Anthracite Diamond finish.
Let me explain why this happened: when ordering the car I wanted to have the 21″ Audi Sport rims but at that time they weren’t available in the configurator. So basically I had two options:

  1. Wait for them to become available but that would mean a substantial delay in delivery time.
  2. Order the car with 21″ multi-spoke rims and have the dealership change them with 21″ Audi Sport rims afterwards.
So obviously I chose option number 2 but a few weeks later the Audi Sport rims appeared in the online configurator and after seeing them on the car they just didn’t do it for me. I think they look great in 21″ on an A6 or A7 and in 22″ on a Q8. But the 21″ on the e-tron simply didn’t seem right. Just a matter of personal taste of course. Take a look at the pictures below and see for yourself. Left are the original Audi Sports in 21″, right are the GMP Gunners in 22″.

So after all the paperwork and explaining was done I drove her out of the delivery room, parked her in front of the dealership, shot a few pictures and took her out for her maiden trip to … Rotterdam, Holland.

Why didn’t I take her home? Well, I wanted to make sure she had the best paint protection available so I ended up with XPEL. I chose for the stealth version because I absolutely love how the matte XPEL and metallic paint blend together, especially in sunlight. My initial plan was to drive her home, keep her for the weekend and drive her to Rotterdam first thing on Monday. But I was told it was best to do the XPEL application on a brand-new paintjob and not to risk paint chips during that first weekend.
The XPEL process, together with a Modesta glass coating would take around 10 business days. I can tell you those two weeks felt longer than the entire period between ordering and receiving the car!

But the wait was worth it! There she was, standing proud in the middle of the large workshop at JD Customs Holland. She already looked impressive inside the workshop but once she was out in the sun the effect of the XPEL stealth really came to life. One word came to mind: AWESOME!
I shot a few pictures at their site and headed home. The ride was extremely comfortable and very relaxing. The ACC with lane assist does a really good job on highways and the comfort seats give excellent support.

And so EV-01’s journey begins. More detailed info on options, consumption, etc. will follow soon in new articles and videos. Subscribe to this blog to make sure you won’t miss a thing!
